PFAS ... Forever Chemicals in your Body

Where do they come from? Everywhere

Are they in the water? You bet!

In the air? Absolutely

The problem with PFAS is that they are everywhere; the water you drink, the air you breathe, the clothes you wear,

the stuff surrounding you every day of your life.

The bigger problem is that PFAS being “Forever Chemicals” is just that – they are FOREVER.

Our recent blog post further explores the impact of PFAS:

PFAS stands for Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.  The majority consist of 8 Carbon atoms, attached to Fluorine, among other atoms. The signature 8 Carbon (C) atoms PFOA molecule attach to Fluorine (F) and the functional group Oxygen (O) and Hydroxide (OH)

But, never mind the chemistry; getting down to what you really need to understand: PFAS chemicals are used in thousands of everyday products… products you, your family, and pets use daily.

Here’s a short sampling of everyday products that you may use and that contain PFAS:

  • Pizza boxes

  • Popcorn bags

  • Raincoats

  • Umbrellas

  • Computer chips

  • Smartphones

  • Firefighting foam

  • Cosmetics such as nail polish and eye makeup

  • Personal care products such as shampoo and dental floss

  • Paint, varnish, and sealers

  • Paper packaging, such as takeout packaging, including wrappers, bags, bowls and other containers

  • Stain-resistant carpets, rugs, upholstery, and other fabrics

  • Sprayable stain protectors

  • Non-stick cookware

  • Shower curtains

  • Baby strollers & car seats

The list goes on...

Another sobering fact is that PFAS bioaccumulate, which means they gradually build up over time in a living organism. That means you – our bodies - and pretty much all the food we eat.  UGH!

As these chemicals build up in our bodies, most of us can expect some negative side effects.  In fact, researchers now recognize how PFAS can negatively impact our health. Potential impacts include:

  • High cholesterol – leading to an increased risk of heart disease. As these fatty deposits accumulate in your veins and arteries, it makes it harder for enough blood to flow throughout your body.

  • Ulcerative colitis – wreaking havoc on your digestive system. From mild discomforts like fatigue, to pain and bleeding while going to the bathroom.

  • Pregnancy-induced hypertension – high blood pressure, headaches, swelling, weight gain, vision blurring, nausea or vomiting, and many more.

  • Thyroid disease – as a catch-all term for the irregular production of hormones by your thyroid gland, which regulates your energy and causes anxiety, fatigue, sleep troubles, weakness, irregular menstrual cycles, forgetfulness, and many more.

  • Testicular or Kidney Cancer – becoming life threatening if not detected early.

  • Increased Liver size – leading to your body not breaking down foods and other toxic substances.

  • Immune and Vaccine suppression – where the efficacy of the shots you take, including COVID, may be rendered less effective than reported.

We further explored the impact of Forever Chemicals in our blog:

We know PFAS are everywhere. In fact, the EPA has declared a safe amount of PFAS in our drinking water limited to 70 Parts Per Trillion (PPT).

Why should ANY amount be allowable?

It bioaccumulates, remember?!

Many of our clients in New Jersey, where there is a high concentration of water testing high for PFAS, have been receiving letters from their municipal water source, such as this letter to water customers in Wycliff Lake from December 2021, alerting them of PFAS contamination.

While Forever Chemicals are everywhere, they can be removed from your drinking and cooking water, whole house water, and even from the air you breathe in your home. PUR2o's water filtration systems successfully remove PFAs from the drinking water in your home.

If you have more questions about PFAs or are ready to commit to safer, healthier water with a PUR2o system, contact us today.
